The Flowers

Alice in Wonderland has always been one of my favorite stories, and it really holds a special place in my heart. Even more lately I've been seeing references to it in totally random places, and I had always wanted to do a set based on the movie and it felt like the perfect time to do so.

I alway say these pieces WANT to be made and they usually make themselves and it's always so fun to see what I made, versus what i THOUGHT I was going to make. I started a flower collection (that seems to be going on perpetually) around the same time the 3D orchids were trending. I had wanted to try the trend, I just never got around to making a set, so I got the bright idea to make my Alice in Wonderland set based on the musical flowers and make them 3D.

I loosely used the background of the screenshots of the flowers I was creating, but I had recently finished Finding the Fae and I was not in the mood to paint something so detailed AND make it 3D again. It turned out to be the perfect decision because the background makes the colors of the flowers really stand out. It was fun trying to create some of the flowers and honestly I just did the best I could! I was originally going to paint the faces on the flowers but when I finished, I knew they needed to stay exactly the way they were. I also thought I was going to paint a mini Alice, and instead I created her as a little charm- which was the first time I had made something like that, I usually just sculpt the design ON the nail... I'm not entirely sure if there is a difference, but it was fun.

Once the nails were finished, I knew they were perfect. I made Alice brown like me, and the fact that the flowers have a slightly animated look but still look more or less like real flowers embodies perfectly my interpretation of the story, and how it pertains to my life. I feel like I am Alice running through this world that I created, just trying to make sense of it along the way.
